161f5a1189 sparc64: Fix number of online CPUs
commit 98937707fea8375e8acea0aaa0b68a956dd52719 upstream.

Nick Bowler reported:
    When using newer kernels on my Ultra 60 with dual 450MHz UltraSPARC-II
    CPUs, I noticed that only CPU 0 comes up, while older kernels (including
    4.7) are working fine with both CPUs.

      I bisected the failure to this commit:

      9b2f753ec2 is the first bad commit
      commit 9b2f753ec2

      sparc64: Fix cpu_possible_mask if nr_cpus is set

    This is a small change that reverts very easily on top of 5.18: there is
    just one trivial conflict. Once reverted, both CPUs work again.

    Maybe this is related to the fact that the CPUs on this system are
    numbered CPU0 and CPU2 (there is no CPU1)?

The current code that adjust cpu_possible based on nr_cpu_ids do not
take into account that CPU's may not come one after each other.
Move the chech to the function that setup the cpu_possible mask
so there is no need to adjust it later.

308b721d69 sparc64: NMI watchdog: fix return value of __setup handler
[ Upstream commit 3ed7c61e49d65dacb96db798c0ab6fcd55a1f20f ]

__setup() handlers should return 1 to obsolete_checksetup() in
init/main.c to indicate that the boot option has been handled.
A return of 0 causes the boot option/value to be listed as an Unknown
kernel parameter and added to init's (limited) argument or environment
strings. Also, error return codes don't mean anything to
obsolete_checksetup() -- only non-zero (usually 1) or zero.
So return 1 from setup_nmi_watchdog().

d9c740c765 exit: Add and use make_task_dead.
commit 0e25498f8cd43c1b5aa327f373dd094e9a006da7 upstream.

There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be
the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate
a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer
in kernel code.

Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as
do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle
catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a
light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so
that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new
concept.

Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic
task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code
is doing.

As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit
rewind_stack_and_make_dead.

320c8057ec arch: setup PF_IO_WORKER threads like PF_KTHREAD
[ Upstream commit 4727dc20e0422211a0e0c72b1ace4ed6096df8a6 ]

PF_IO_WORKER are kernel threads too, but they aren't PF_KTHREAD in the
sense that we don't assign ->set_child_tid with our own structure. Just
ensure that every arch sets up the PF_IO_WORKER threads like kthreads
in the arch implementation of copy_thread().

40a5c93a74 uaccess: fix type mismatch warnings from access_ok()
[ Upstream commit 23fc539e81295b14b50c6ccc5baeb4f3d59d822d ]

On some architectures, access_ok() does not do any argument type
checking, so replacing the definition with a generic one causes
a few warnings for harmless issues that were never caught before.

Fix the ones that I found either through my own test builds or
that were reported by the 0-day bot.

5520d27f02 sparc: avoid stringop-overread errors
[ Upstream commit fc7c028dcdbfe981bca75d2a7b95f363eb691ef3 ]

The sparc mdesc code does pointer games with 'struct mdesc_hdr', but
didn't describe to the compiler how that header is then followed by the
data that the header describes.

As a result, gcc is now unhappy since it does stricter pointer range
tracking, and doesn't understand about how these things work. This
results in various errors like:

    arch/sparc/kernel/mdesc.c: In function ‘mdesc_node_by_name’:
    arch/sparc/kernel/mdesc.c:647:22: error: ‘strcmp’ reading 1 or more bytes from a region of size 0 [-Werror=stringop-overread]
      647 |                 if (!strcmp(names + ep[ret].name_offset, name))
          |                      ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

which are easily avoided by just describing 'struct mdesc_hdr' better,
and making the node_block() helper function look into that unsized
data[] that follows the header.

This makes the sparc64 build happy again at least for my cross-compiler
version (gcc version 11.2.1).

3c51d82d0b sched/core: Initialize the idle task with preemption disabled
[ Upstream commit f1a0a376ca0c4ef1fc3d24e3e502acbb5b795674 ]

As pointed out by commit

  de9b8f5dcb ("sched: Fix crash trying to dequeue/enqueue the idle thread")

init_idle() can and will be invoked more than once on the same idle
task. At boot time, it is invoked for the boot CPU thread by
sched_init(). Then smp_init() creates the threads for all the secondary
CPUs and invokes init_idle() on them.

As the hotplug machinery brings the secondaries to life, it will issue
calls to idle_thread_get(), which itself invokes init_idle() yet again.
In this case it's invoked twice more per secondary: at _cpu_up(), and at
bringup_cpu().

Given smp_init() already initializes the idle tasks for all *possible*
CPUs, no further initialization should be required. Now, removing
init_idle() from idle_thread_get() exposes some interesting expectations
with regards to the idle task's preempt_count: the secondary startup always
issues a preempt_disable(), requiring some reset of the preempt count to 0
between hot-unplug and hotplug, which is currently served by
idle_thread_get() -> idle_init().

Given the idle task is supposed to have preemption disabled once and never
see it re-enabled, it seems that what we actually want is to initialize its
preempt_count to PREEMPT_DISABLED and leave it there. Do that, and remove
init_idle() from idle_thread_get().

Secondary startups were patched via coccinelle:

  @begone@
  @@

  -preempt_disable();
  ...
  cpu_startup_entry(CPUHP_AP_ONLINE_IDLE);

f2b38f03a3 sparc64: Fix opcode filtering in handling of no fault loads
[ Upstream commit e5e8b80d352ec999d2bba3ea584f541c83f4ca3f ]

is_no_fault_exception() has two bugs which were discovered via random
opcode testing with stress-ng. Both are caused by improper filtering
of opcodes.

The first bug can be triggered by a floating point store with a no-fault
ASI, for instance "sta %f0, [%g0] #ASI_PNF", opcode C1A01040.

The code first tests op3[5] (0x1000000), which denotes a floating
point instruction, and then tests op3[2] (0x200000), which denotes a
store instruction. But these bits are not mutually exclusive, and the
above mentioned opcode has both bits set. The intent is to filter out
stores, so the test for stores must be done first in order to have
any effect.

The second bug can be triggered by a floating point load with one of
the invalid ASI values 0x8e or 0x8f, which pass this check in
is_no_fault_exception():
     if ((asi & 0xf2) == ASI_PNF)

An example instruction is "ldqa [%l7 + %o7] #ASI 0x8f, %f38",
opcode CF95D1EF. Asi values greater than 0x8b (ASI_SNFL) are fatal
in handle_ldf_stq(), and is_no_fault_exception() must not allow these
invalid asi values to make it that far.

In both of these cases, handle_ldf_stq() reacts by calling
sun4v_data_access_exception() or spitfire_data_access_exception(),
which call is_no_fault_exception() and results in an infinite
recursion.

ecb8ac8b1f mm/madvise: introduce process_madvise() syscall: an external memory hinting API
There is usecase that System Management Software(SMS) want to give a
memory hint like MADV_[COLD|PAGEEOUT] to other processes and in the
case of Android, it is the ActivityManagerService.

The information required to make the reclaim decision is not known to the
app. Instead, it is known to the centralized userspace
daemon(ActivityManagerService), and that daemon must be able to initiate
reclaim on its own without any app involvement.

To solve the issue, this patch introduces a new syscall
process_madvise(2). It uses pidfd of an external process to give the
hint. It also supports vector address range because Android app has
thousands of vmas due to zygote so it's totally waste of CPU and power if
we should call the syscall one by one for each vma.(With testing 2000-vma
syscall vs 1-vector syscall, it showed 15% performance improvement. I
think it would be bigger in real practice because the testing ran very
cache friendly environment).

Another potential use case for the vector range is to amortize the cost
ofTLB shootdowns for multiple ranges when using MADV_DONTNEED; this could
benefit users like TCP receive zerocopy and malloc implementations. In
future, we could find more usecases for other advises so let's make it
happens as API since we introduce a new syscall at this moment. With
that, existing madvise(2) user could replace it with process_madvise(2)
with their own pid if they want to have batch address ranges support
feature.

ince it could affect other process's address range, only privileged
process(PTRACE_MODE_ATTACH_FSCREDS) or something else(e.g., being the same
UID) gives it the right to ptrace the process could use it successfully.
The flag argument is reserved for future use if we need to extend the API.

I think supporting all hints madvise has/will supported/support to
process_madvise is rather risky. Because we are not sure all hints make
sense from external process and implementation for the hint may rely on
the caller being in the current context so it could be error-prone. Thus,
I just limited hints as MADV_[COLD|PAGEOUT] in this patch.

If someone want to add other hints, we could hear the usecase and review
it for each hint. It's safer for maintenance rather than introducing a
buggy syscall but hard to fix it later.

So finally, the API is as follows,

      ssize_t process_madvise(int pidfd, const struct iovec *iovec,
                unsigned long vlen, int advice, unsigned int flags);

    DESCRIPTION
      The process_madvise() system call is used to give advice or directions
      to the kernel about the address ranges from external process as well as
      local process. It provides the advice to address ranges of process
      described by iovec and vlen. The goal of such advice is to improve
      system or application performance.

      The pidfd selects the process referred to by the PID file descriptor
      specified in pidfd. (See pidofd_open(2) for further information)

      The pointer iovec points to an array of iovec structures, defined in
      <sys/uio.h> as:

        struct iovec {
            void *iov_base;         /* starting address */
            size_t iov_len; /* number of bytes to be advised */
        };

      The iovec describes address ranges beginning at address(iov_base)
      and with size length of bytes(iov_len).

      The vlen represents the number of elements in iovec.

      The advice is indicated in the advice argument, which is one of the
      following at this moment if the target process specified by pidfd is
      external.

        MADV_COLD
        MADV_PAGEOUT

      Permission to provide a hint to external process is governed by a
      ptrace access mode PTRACE_MODE_ATTACH_FSCREDS check; see ptrace(2).

      The process_madvise supports every advice madvise(2) has if target
      process is in same thread group with calling process so user could
      use process_madvise(2) to extend existing madvise(2) to support
      vector address ranges.

    RETURN VALUE
      On success, process_madvise() returns the number of bytes advised.
      This return value may be less than the total number of requested
      bytes, if an error occurred. The caller should check return value
      to determine whether a partial advice occurred.

FAQ:

Q.1 - Why does any external entity have better knowledge?

Quote from Sandeep

"For Android, every application (including the special SystemServer)
are forked from Zygote. The reason of course is to share as many
libraries and classes between the two as possible to benefit from the
preloading during boot.

After applications start, (almost) all of the APIs end up calling into
this SystemServer process over IPC (binder) and back to the
application.

In a fully running system, the SystemServer monitors every single
process periodically to calculate their PSS / RSS and also decides
which process is "important" to the user for interactivity.

So, because of how these processes start _and_ the fact that the
SystemServer is looping to monitor each process, it does tend to *know*
which address range of the application is not used / useful.

Besides, we can never rely on applications to clean things up
themselves. We've had the "hey app1, the system is low on memory,
please trim your memory usage down" notifications for a long time[1].
They rely on applications honoring the broadcasts and very few do.

So, if we want to avoid the inevitable killing of the application and
restarting it, some way to be able to tell the OS about unimportant
memory in these applications will be useful.

- ssp

Q.2 - How to guarantee the race(i.e., object validation) between when
giving a hint from an external process and get the hint from the target
process?

process_madvise operates on the target process's address space as it
exists at the instant that process_madvise is called. If the space
target process can run between the time the process_madvise process
inspects the target process address space and the time that
process_madvise is actually called, process_madvise may operate on
memory regions that the calling process does not expect. It's the
responsibility of the process calling process_madvise to close this
race condition. For example, the calling process can suspend the
target process with ptrace, SIGSTOP, or the freezer cgroup so that it
doesn't have an opportunity to change its own address space before
process_madvise is called. Another option is to operate on memory
regions that the caller knows a priori will be unchanged in the target
process. Yet another option is to accept the race for certain
process_madvise calls after reasoning that mistargeting will do no
harm. The suggested API itself does not provide synchronization. It
also apply other APIs like move_pages, process_vm_write.

The race isn't really a problem though. Why is it so wrong to require
that callers do their own synchronization in some manner? Nobody
objects to write(2) merely because it's possible for two processes to
open the same file and clobber each other's writes --- instead, we tell
people to use flock or something. Think about mmap. It never
guarantees newly allocated address space is still valid when the user
tries to access it because other threads could unmap the memory right
before. That's where we need synchronization by using other API or
design from userside. It shouldn't be part of API itself. If someone
needs more fine-grained synchronization rather than process level,
there were two ideas suggested - cookie[2] and anon-fd[3]. Both are
applicable via using last reserved argument of the API but I don't
think it's necessary right now since we have already ways to prevent
the race so don't want to add additional complexity with more
fine-grained optimization model.

To make the API extend, it reserved an unsigned long as last argument
so we could support it in future if someone really needs it.

Q.3 - Why doesn't ptrace work?

Injecting an madvise in the target process using ptrace would not work
for us because such injected madvise would have to be executed by the
target process, which means that process would have to be runnable and
that creates the risk of the abovementioned race and hinting a wrong
VMA. Furthermore, we want to act the hint in caller's context, not the
callee's, because the callee is usually limited in cpuset/cgroups or
even freezed state so they can't act by themselves quick enough, which
causes more thrashing/kill. It doesn't work if the target process are
ptraced(e.g., strace, debugger, minidump) because a process can have at
most one ptracer.

  orphan section in the kernel or if a section is not sized as expected.

  And because we relied on so many silent assumptions in this area, fix
  a metric ton of dependencies and some outright bugs related to this,
  before we can finally enable the checks on the x86, ARM and ARM64
  platforms"

Split out all the bits that are purely for dma_map_ops implementations

bafb056ce2 sparc64: remove mm_cpumask clearing to fix kthread_use_mm race
The de facto (and apparently uncommented) standard for using an mm had,
thanks to this code in sparc if nothing else, been that you must have a
reference on mm_users *and that reference must have been obtained with
mmget()*, i.e., from a thread with a reference to mm_users that had used
the mm.

The introduction of mmget_not_zero() in commit d2005e3f41
("userfaultfd: don't pin the user memory in userfaultfd_file_create()")
allowed mm_count holders to aoperate on user mappings asynchronously
from the actual threads using the mm, but they were not to load those
mappings into their TLB (i.e., walking vmas and page tables is okay,
kthread_use_mm() is not).

io_uring 2b188cc1bb ("Add io_uring IO interface") added code which
does a kthread_use_mm() from a mmget_not_zero() refcount.

The problem with this is code which previously assumed mm == current->mm
and mm->mm_users == 1 implies the mm will remain single-threaded at
least until this thread creates another mm_users reference, has now
broken.

arch/sparc/kernel/smp_64.c:

    if (atomic_read(&mm->mm_users) == 1) {
        cpumask_copy(mm_cpumask(mm), cpumask_of(cpu));
        goto local_flush_and_out;
    }

vs fs/io_uring.c

    if (unlikely(!(ctx->flags & IORING_SETUP_SQPOLL) ||
                 !mmget_not_zero(ctx->sqo_mm)))
        return -EFAULT;
    kthread_use_mm(ctx->sqo_mm);

mmget_not_zero() could come in right after the mm_users == 1 test, then
kthread_use_mm() which sets its CPU in the mm_cpumask. That update could
be lost if cpumask_copy() occurs afterward.

I propose we fix this by allowing mmget_not_zero() to be a first-class
reference, and not have this obscure undocumented and unchecked
restriction.

The basic fix for sparc64 is to remove its mm_cpumask clearing code. The
optimisation could be effectively restored by sending IPIs to mm_cpumask
members and having them remove themselves from mm_cpumask. This is more
tricky so I leave it as an exercise for someone with a sparc64 SMP.
powerpc has a (currently similarly broken) example.

1e9d90dbed dma-mapping: introduce dma_get_seg_boundary_nr_pages()
We found that callers of dma_get_seg_boundary mostly do an ALIGN
with page mask and then do a page shift to get number of pages:
    ALIGN(boundary + 1, 1 << shift) >> shift

However, the boundary might be as large as ULONG_MAX, which means
that a device has no specific boundary limit. So either "+ 1" or
passing it to ALIGN() would potentially overflow.

According to kernel defines:
    #define ALIGN_MASK(x, mask) (((x) + (mask)) & ~(mask))
    #define ALIGN(x, a)	ALIGN_MASK(x, (typeof(x))(a) - 1)

We can simplify the logic here into a helper function doing:
  ALIGN(boundary + 1, 1 << shift) >> shift
= ALIGN_MASK(b + 1, (1 << s) - 1) >> s
= {[b + 1 + (1 << s) - 1] & ~[(1 << s) - 1]} >> s
= [b + 1 + (1 << s) - 1] >> s
= [b + (1 << s)] >> s
= (b >> s) + 1

This patch introduces and applies dma_get_seg_boundary_nr_pages()
as an overflow-free helper for the dma_get_seg_boundary() callers
to get numbers of pages. It also takes care of the NULL dev case
for non-DMA API callers.

88db0aa242 all arch: remove system call sys_sysctl
Since commit 61a47c1ad3 ("sysctl: Remove the sysctl system call"),
sys_sysctl is actually unavailable: any input can only return an error.

We have been warning about people using the sysctl system call for years
and believe there are no more users. Even if there are users of this
interface if they have not complained or fixed their code by now they
probably are not going to, so there is no point in warning them any
longer.

So completely remove sys_sysctl on all architectures.

Pull locking updates from Thomas Gleixner:
 "A set of locking fixes and updates:

   - Untangle the header spaghetti which causes build failures in
     various situations caused by the lockdep additions to seqcount to
     validate that the write side critical sections are non-preemptible.

   - The seqcount associated lock debug addons which were blocked by the
     above fallout.

     seqcount writers contrary to seqlock writers must be externally
     serialized, which usually happens via locking - except for strict
     per CPU seqcounts. As the lock is not part of the seqcount, lockdep
     cannot validate that the lock is held.

     This new debug mechanism adds the concept of associated locks.
     sequence count has now lock type variants and corresponding
     initializers which take a pointer to the associated lock used for
     writer serialization. If lockdep is enabled the pointer is stored
     and write_seqcount_begin() has a lockdep assertion to validate that
     the lock is held.

     Aside of the type and the initializer no other code changes are
     required at the seqcount usage sites. The rest of the seqcount API
     is unchanged and determines the type at compile time with the help
     of _Generic which is possible now that the minimal GCC version has
     been moved up.

     Adding this lockdep coverage unearthed a handful of seqcount bugs
     which have been addressed already independent of this.

     While generally useful this comes with a Trojan Horse twist: On RT
     kernels the write side critical section can become preemtible if
     the writers are serialized by an associated lock, which leads to
     the well known reader preempts writer livelock. RT prevents this by
     storing the associated lock pointer independent of lockdep in the
     seqcount and changing the reader side to block on the lock when a
     reader detects that a writer is in the write side critical section.

   - Conversion of seqcount usage sites to associated types and
     initializers"
